Understanding the Functioning of an Air Source Heat Pump

Daniel Fifield

Updated: Jun 17, 2024

Air source heat pumps are gaining popularity as countries strive to reduce their carbon emissions. They offer a cost-effective and sustainable heating solution for homes and businesses throughout the Southwest.

How Does an Air Source Heat Pump Work?

Air source heat pumps work by extracting heat from the outside air and transferring it into a building for heating. They utilise a refrigerant cycle to absorb heat from the outdoor air and release it inside the building using coils and a compressor. This process remains effective even at low temperatures, and the heat pump can also provide cooling by reversing the refrigerant flow. In addition to being energy-efficient, the system is environmentally friendly as it moves heat instead of generating it from fuel like conventional heating systems.

Benefits of an Air Source Heat Pump

Air Source heat pumps have many benefits, and they're also rising in popularity. So, what are the benefits of an air-source heat pump?

  • Air source heat pumps offer higher energy efficiency, being 3-4 times more efficient than traditional energy systems.

  • They are not only cost-effective but also easy to install.

  • There is a boiler upgrade scheme available for air-source heat pumps, providing £7,500 towards the cost.

  • These pumps are versatile and suitable for heating, cooling, and supplying hot water in both residential and commercial settings.

  • They also boast a long lifespan, save money on energy bills, and contribute to lower carbon emissions.

What type of air source heat pumps are there?

There are two main types of air-source heat pumps: air-to-air heat pumps and air-to-water heat pumps.

Air-to-air heat pumps absorb heat from the outside air and transfer it directly into your home using a ventilation fan system. On the other hand, air-to-water heat pumps take heat from the outside air to warm up water, which is then used to heat radiators, underfloor heating, and taps. It's worth noting that air-to-water heat pumps are generally more expensive than air-to-air heat pumps.
